Brick Sculpture

Woodlouse

Commissioned by Clifton Place Action Group for a new "doorstep green" in Easton, Bristol. A new small green space in the heart of the residential community and replacing an ugly toilet block. The idea of the curled up wood lice, placed within a planting bed, came out of workshops and expresses the following. Symbolically its armour and form represent protection and the defensive strategies which can be seen as desirable supportive qualities in communities, families and individuals. The form and surface directly relate to the colour of a woodlice and the nature of the brick walls used throughout the site. They are prolific in the local environment and were collected and used extensively in workshops. In contrast, the caterpillar idea, again the result of workshops, represents vulnerability and transformation, important themes to emerge from local people, and follows the movement, form,( and is carved directly out of) the low wall.
